I have walked for 18 days continually in Leh and Ladakh but that was in the past but I don't think I would be able to repeat that trip now because a trip like that would be too much for me now. I mostly do 2-3 days' trip now in easier but interesting areas with lots of stays on the way. I have just completed an overnight walking trip for charity that was only 28 km but we did it in almost 2 days.

18 days!!! How many KM you walked for? That's really amazing. My highest is only 3 to 4 days in hiking. If I talk about walking on normal place then I have went for 5 to 6 days walking for going to particular place. But not more than that. 18 days, I don't think I can go for such long route.

So as it was Leh and Ladakh, I am sure the road was not kind of plain highway, I mean you should have face lots of up and down.

It was trip to Leh that we started from Manali. I hope you have already visited Manali so you would know about it. It was the famous trip of Darcha Lamayuru Trekking via Darcha, Palemo, Zanskar, Sumdo, Chumi Napo, Shingo La, Lakham, Kurgiak, Teha, Purni, Ichar, Mune, Padum, Kargil and finally Leh. We came back by air. By the way it was a planned trip by a travel agency and we reached up to the height of 16000 ft at places. We generally walked 5-6 hours a day.

I still wonder how many KM you walked. Google is showing walking distance of around 460km from Manali to Leh!! That's really long one. And you must have face many up and down roads which makes even harder to walk. You really have done good job there.

Yes I have visited Manali two times so far. One time we have think about going Leh by road but roads were close at that time.

What you have checked is through main road but if you check the distance in between the places I have mentioned above would be little different. We walked 20-25 KM everyday because walking beyond that was not possible. Yes we walked close to 500 km in very difficult terrain.

Google shows different distances for walking, by road, train and by air. So what I mentioned was for walking. but I am not sure if it is that accurate. When we had program for walking to particular temple, we were walking 30 to 35km in a day, but yes that was on plain surface. 20 to 25km at that area should be around 40 to 45 km for sure.

I agree with you Naruto, too much luggage will slow us down. still, some important things must be taken with us. Just as you have said...food, water, a lantern, clothes and the medical kit are necessary to survive. I would not take a tablet with me, maybe a phone yes just in case that I am in trouble and I need to contact someone!

It's obvious that luggage/lots of stuff you carry with you to hiking will help you keep-up with the many days your trip/hike is going to take.. But too much luggage/stuff is tiring especially in cases such as this which @Ray1 undergone. Though it would be like weight-lifting kind of exercise, It will not make my hike moment fun. I carry what I must, but it's alright if it's ideal for others.
