Have you experienced a hiking marathon? It’s just actually a very long hike that takes days. I once was invited to such an event that will cover the mountain range of Sierra Madre in the Philippines. The hike would take about 5 days and that gave me a problem because during that time, I was already working and I couldn’t get a 5-day vacation. I think it’s fun because the hikers were just like strolling in the woods and in the mountain pathways. No hurry, just enjoy the sights. And when they eat, it was like having a picnic. I’m sure to enjoy the nightly bonfire, roasting whatever there is to roast. But now I don’t think I can do that marathon hike anymore because of my age.

I don't think anyone is going to compete in such an event but it is rather as you put it; for fun.

I had participated for such an event thrice however they all were a day affairs. The only longest one a mountain climb which was a 5 day climb.
